How did the

Self-Courage Toolkit help Haddy?

In 2010, after the sudden passing of Haddy’s dad, she struggled intensely with incessant worry and crippling anxiety which on the surface no one could tell but it was deeply affecting Haddy’s life. As a result, she was diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder by her therapist. One of the tools, the Fear and Anxiety Reduction Tool gracefully transformed Haddy’s life and she is now living a fun and meaningful life with her witty sense of humour restored.
Have you been in a position where you were treated discriminately and poorly in the workplace, but you were afraid of speaking up? A few years ago, this experience happened to Haddy. Thankfully, with the SELF-COURAGE TOOLKIT at her disposal, it empowered Haddy to find the courage to confidently speak up and raised an internal grievance. She went a bit further to ensure the organisation did the right thing.
If you believe in the cause you are fighting for, there will be opposition and sometimes it comes at a cost. Haddy is a changemaker in racial equality. The work includes liaising with and challenging high-profile stakeholders such as city leaders and decision-makers of the city. For instance, the Archbishop of York hosted the first anti-racism summit where Haddy had to give a speech which she feared. The hot and cold debrief tool helps Haddy to keep going to create a better city for everyone.

Research

A Brief History and Research of Courage

The Origin of Courage

The root of the word Courage is cor — Latin word for heart. In one of its earliest forms, the word courage meant to speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart. However, over a period of time the word has been hijacked into the macho realm of heroicism and conflict. This toolkit aims to recover the definition and bring it back to its empathic origin of heartfelt strength of self.

The Self-Courage BraveheartTM mark represents your journey from feeling anxious and fearful to a powerful state of conviction to take the courage to act and to speak up. The BraveheartTM is the connection of the yellow and pink speech bubbles. The yellow bubble signifies the questions when confronting your fears. The pink bubble with three dots relates to writing eveyrday with the help of the self-courage toolkit. When these bubbles merge they form red, guiding you to discover where your heart lies at its core and what to do about your fears.

The Role of Courage in Predicting Behavior

There is significant amount of research on courage and its linkage with fear. The British Psychological Society anecdotally explained that “we frequently come across situations that require courage, big and small: job interviews, dates, public speaking. Unlike fearlessness, where we're not afraid of what we're about to do, courage necessitates feeling fear and pushing through, sometimes in an act of great resilience. Visit Site

In the same article, the society succinctly summarised a recent (2022) study that was conducted by Melissa L. McKinlay and Peter L. Norton. The researchers explored how courage affects our ability to participate in fear-inducing tasks. They found that the more courageous we believe ourselves to be, the better we perform when faced with a situation we find particularly scary. Although the result also suggests that courage exists as an innate part of somebody's character, other studies have concluded that courage is a context-dependent state, occurring in specific situations such as when public speaking-fearful participants have to speak for several minutes. Contextualising Whistleblowing in State Institutions: An Empirical Examination of the Reproduction of Silence

Ian Foxley, a whistleblower who discovered and exposed corruption within defence procurement contracts in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In his Ph.D thesis “Contextualising Whistleblowing in State Institutions - An Empirical Examination of the Reproduction of Silence in the Saudi Arabian National Guard Communications (SANGCOM) Project” found that one of the root-causes why people stay silent is fear. He writes, it is the fear of:

Loss of work, wealth, home and health;

Loss of reputation

Fear of future careers

Observation of others treated poorly

Fear of ostracisation and banishment

Avoidance of the media limelight

Fear of doing the wrong thing

Spousal and family pressures

Testimonials

What people are saying about the SELF-COURAGE TOOLKIT

Christopher Opio

Human Rights Defender

I must say, I'm impressed with the tool's potential. I appreciate how it helps identify and address fears, allowing for early preparation and a significant reduction in onsite anxiety.

The document also provides a sense of confidence, knowing that you've anticipated and prepared for potential challenges. I particularly like that it goes beyond content preparation and considers our inner needs and weaknesses.

Ellie Asha Bano-Few

Young Professional

I sometimes overthink and worry about how a situation will go, which can lead to negative thoughts that prevent me from feeling confident and ready to face challenging situations. I found the courage tool really helpful in channeling my energy and reframing the thoughts into a more helpful, positive and constructive thought exercise. The questions lead me through a more balanced, rational and kind way of thinking that allowed me to feel better prepared and confident in myself. If I could build this thought exercise into a habit, I know my general sense of courage would improve.

Mario Owiriwa

President of Wellbeing and Diversity at York St. John University

I strongly believe this will be very useful. The tool might be the next thing to push out there across all works and fields of life across all sectors in the uk and beyond.

Suzanne Hattersley

Medical Researcher

“I found the toolkit extremely helpful as it straight away prompts you to add step by step reasonings on why you started feeling anxious in the first place and you actually end up identifying ways to combat this. It helped me rationalise and realise that there are always ways to help yourself in any given situation. I believe this toolkit can be used by anyone whether it’s work or school related or in everyday life and will help you feel a huge sense of relief.
